One firefighter died and others got hurt when a house exploded in Sterling on February 16. It happened around 8:30 in the evening on Silver Ridge Drive. Firefighters had come because of a gas leak, but then the house blew up. Some firefighters
got stuck inside at first, but by 9:15, everyone was either saved or found.
Nine firefighters and two civilians went to hospitals. One firefighter passed away. The explosion wrecked the house and caused damage to nearby homes. Assistant Fire Chief James Williams said the scene was a total mess with debris everywhere.
He mentioned how tough this is for everyone in the fire department, both physically and emotionally. It's one of the worst kinds of emergencies they face.

This is the second time a deadly house explosion has happened in Loudoun County. The last one was in 1998. This event is also the biggest challenge for the fire service since 2008, when a house near Leesburg collapsed while firefighters were inside, injuring seven of them.
